I Love Fire
It spews out of the mountains,
It strikes down from the clouds,
It devours forests whole.
It is our unruly ally,
And we alone love it so.
It cooks our food, it fuels our factories.
It burns in our automobiles and cigarettes.
It taught us how to use destruction to create.
It transforms cold death into light and warmth.
It’s dance entrances us, like a silent symphony of light
It shines hot in the sky, and churns deep within the earth.
There is even a fire burning within you.
I Love Air
This air all around us is the very life inside us.
It holds the whole world in it’s soft embrace.
Sometimes it’s still and silent, invisible,
but ceaselessly circulating.
The sky reaches down to stroke the ground forever
To sway the trees, to fly the birds.
To enter your lungs, and leave with a sigh
It’s always there, in between everywhere
That secret air we share in our chests
And countless breaths, from first to last
breathing slow, breathing fast,
With all the scents, all the sounds
Carried weightlessly on the wind.
I Love Earth
Here we are, on a big wet spinning rock.
The sun will burn you, the poles will freeze you.
Predators and diseases will seek you out.
In fact, life itself is a fatal condition.
But we survive, across oceans and deserts.
Over the mountains and through the jungles, as well.
We carry infants and build houses.
We carry hope and build a community.
We carry money and build factories.
We carry on and build the future.
Thankful for the earth we are born
and we live on this one special planet.
