What do you really want to hear?
Do you need a good kick in the rear?
Well, now that I have your ear
Let’s talk about this hidden fear
That robs you of good cheer.
To me, it’s perfectly clear.
The future draws too near,
yet you refuse to shed a tear
for the past you held so dear,
for reasons that remain unclear.
Or maybe you like to mock and jeer
At the failures of your career.
You spit and squint and sneer
At the mistakes you deem severe,
Yet, to your history you adhere.
You won’t find the frontier
Unless you find a way to steer
Around the obstacles that appear.
Unless you become sincere
About the things that you revere.
Instead, you stay in high gear
until it’s all too much to bear,
and you feel you can’t get air,
and the stitches begin to tear,
and this time you swear, you swear
it will be different, you will prepare,
with faith and courage, you will dare
to stand up from the comfortable chair
that locks you inside your stagnant lair.
But you will never wake from the nightmare
Because you secretly want to be there.
However, you may not even be aware
of your own deeply rooted despair
that your life is simply beyond repair.
Your eyes shy away from daylight’s glare.
I have some wisdom that I can share.
It takes the form of a humble prayer.
“Help me please, not to compare
my life to others, but call it fair
that my fate is not only my burden to bear.”
