I eat food made by people I’ll never meet,
They fuel my body and keep me on my feet.
I can eat fruit all winter, and meat all summer.
What the ancestors would say about that, I wonder.
My stomach has traveled across the globe
But try telling that to my frontal lobe.
I’ve had guavas all the way from Guatemala,
And about a billion bananas from Brazil.
Spices from India, and rices from China.
Whiskey shipped from Scotland,
And cocoa from the Caribbean.
I’ve passed by endless acres of orchards
Growing peaches, plums and apricots.
Almonds, pecans, and pistachios, too.
But I’ve never shaken hands with a farmer.
It sounds crazy, but it’s true.
And chances are, it’s the same for you.
