Without that one special star
In the firework display of the Milky Way
The planet Earth would be dead and dark.
Nothing would grow, not even a mold.
But here we are, beautiful and bold
Busy being bought and sold
Finding too few hands to hold.
Into life and death we are suddenly pulled.
First you’re too young, then you’re too old.
First you’re too hot, then you’re too cold.
You get used to being off balance, I’m told.
One must learn this dangerous dance
Because everything kills you given half a chance
Even time, gravity, electricity, desire,
A drunk driver, a forest fire, a lovable liar…
I’m not trying to make it sound so dire,
But it’s not like we live in the Shire.
We are humans, not hobbits
We all have some bad habits.
Drinking, smoking, shooting, polluting
If it’s not one thing, it’s another.
You have this life, there is no other.
If you can’t handle it,
You can blame your mother,
But if you can,
You must help your brother.
Just try to do your part,
And listen to your heart.
And don’t think you’re too smart
To stop and smell the fart.
