As a child I was so enchanted
by the snowfall outside my window,
the dawn dazzling my sleepy eyes.
Thick blankets of stardust
pulled over the whole world
while we were still dreaming.
I remember standing deep in the snow,
my whole self encased in cotton,
head thrown back, tongue outstretched
to catch the feathery snowflakes
drifting down from heaven.
chubby pink cheeks, eyelashes white.
Now I only look at the ground
and the icy road ahead of me,
rigid joints and gritted teeth,
Goddamn glasses fogging up
So I never see the snow angels
like the ones I used to be.
